Christians Conservatives go with third party candidate?

The news over the weekend that if certain Republicans become the nominee in the general election Christian conservatives may choose to go with a third party expose starkly how little the Republicans understand the nature of their success. To this point, Christians have supported the Republicans mainly because they are a pro-life group and to some extent because of the emphasis on limited government, and not, as some Republicans and probably many Democrats believe, because they support ‘Big Business.’ The Bush administration hasn’t been stellar on the issue of ‘limited government’ so that means that the only thing really in common between these Christians and the Republicans is the stance on abortion. We’ll have to wait and see, I guess, but it is looking like the GOP is going to finally get its eyes opened: Yes, Christian Conservatives will support a third party, even if that means the Democrats will win the election. The GOP is going to have to come to recognize that what is in their interest is to put into action the interests of those who elect them, and not merely use those people and dismiss them after you’ve got what you want from them. The Christians have a hard decision ahead of them, but with if there is no difference between the Republican and Democrat nominee, the fact that they serve a higher power becomes easier to see…
